Go Touch Some Grass (For Everyone’s Sake)

There’s a certain joy in working from home next to a teenager who has a LOT of unsolicited opinions and unsolicited pearls of wisdom. Delivered at random intervals, no scheduling required.
Today was one of those days at work.
Everything that could go wrong - did.
People not doing what they were supposed to. Me spinning faster than the office printer when it eats paper.
And yes - this was all before my third coffee.

Midway through one very intense conversation, my teenager wandered into my home office, totally unfazed, and said:

“Mom, for the love of God and for all of our sake, please go outside, touch some grass, hug a tree. It will help.”

Mic drop.
Exit stage left.

And apparently, “Go touch some grass” is gamer-speak for “log off and go outside.”
Who knew? (Not me. The only gaming I ever did was Solitaire on my desktop. And if I was feeling really wild - old-school Mario.)

But I did it.
I left the laptop, walked for 20 minutes without my phone, and hugged… okay fine, stood near a tree. And somehow, the spinning stopped.

So here’s my unsolicited pearl for you this Monday morning:
If you feel like you need to touch the grass, hug the tree, or just step outside and breathe like a human - DO IT!
Can’t promise the bush next to your house will heal you.
But it might just save your sanity.

Same woman. Fewer apologies. Better hair. Slightly unhinged - but in a fun, self-aware way.

Left: says YES too fast, smiles on cue, organises the group gift, remembers your kid’s food allergies, and absorbs everyone’s emotional drama like a high-functioning human sponge.
Right: says NO, doesn’t explain it, doesn’t feel bad, and doesn’t offer to write a follow-up email just because she has “the time.” (She doesn’t!)

The woman on the left thought “low maintenance” was a personality type. She was helpful, pleasant, always available - basically the human equivalent of a really supportive bra.
And yes, she made it all look easy. She also developed a permanent eyelid twitch and a deep spiritual connection to Excel. She was the one who knew where everything was, remembered all the logins, and filled the emotional gaps in meetings, households, and group holidays.
Hey, she even won PA of the Year in 2018! Yep, that was me!
Smiled for the photo. Thanked the panel. Went back to answering 137 emails, coordinating four birthdays, and quietly spiralling by Thursday. She confused being needed with being respected. She thought “choosing herself” meant buying fancy shampoo and using it during a 4-minute power shower between fixing everyone else’s problems.
(It helped. Temporarily.)

Now?
The woman on the right?
Still figuring it out. Still sometimes says yes when she shouldn’t. Still gets emotional in stationery aisles. But she’s done with being the default setting for everyone else’s convenience. She works out like it’s therapy. Eats the greens, lifts the weights, wears the SPF.
But the biggest shift isn’t in her skincare routine - it’s in her mindset. She no longer shrinks herself to make other people comfortable. She doesn’t audition for worthiness. And she definitely doesn’t organise the group gift anymore.

No, this isn’t a glow-up.
It’s just what happens when you hit the “what if I just stopped people-pleasing and lived?” phase of womanhood.
Try it. It pairs well with SPF, boundaries, and not giving a single polished damn.

She Didn’t Even Flinch

This morning at the gym, I watched a woman - easily in her 70s - hold a plank like she was waiting for the kettle to boil.
No fuss. No theatrics. No “look at me” energy.
Just stillness. Strength. Presence.
I was planking too. I work out like it’s my part-time job - strong core, good form, smug playlist. But beside her, I suddenly felt like I was trying a bit too hard.

She wasn’t performing. She wasn’t trying to be impressive. She just was. Solid. Unmoved. And I couldn’t stop watching her.

It reminded me of the kind of strength I’ve seen - and tried to hold - outside the gym.

Lately, women keep reaching out. Not for formal sessions or big breakthroughs.
Just to talk.
Between client calls and school runs. Between reheated coffee and another load of laundry.
And at first, I thought: why me?
I’m just out here trying to keep the wheels on, same as everyone else. But then I realised - if there are questions, maybe it’s because I’ve lived enough to have something useful to say. Maybe I’m not the blind leading the blind. Maybe I’ve just picked up a few things along the way.

I didn’t set out to become a coach.
I just started having honest conversations with women who were tired of shrinking.
Tired of waiting. Tired of holding a metaphorical plank for years and pretending it didn’t hurt.
And somehow, those conversations became something solid.
Something that held.
Kind of like that woman this morning -
quiet, steady, and not going anywhere.

Anxious by Managing (Part II)
aka The Delegation Diaries

Yesterday’s post about my questionable relationship with delegation hit a nerve — and my DMs have been buzzing like I accidentally posted my home Wi-Fi password.

Turns out, a lot of us are out here doing Olympic-level mental gymnastics to not ask for help. Because why delegate when you can do it faster yourself, exactly how you like it, while silently resenting everyone around you for not reading your mind?

Here’s what I’ve realised:
I’m not bad at delegating.
I’m brilliant at micromanaging.
It’s an art form, really. I delegate with a full instruction manual, a colour-coded timeline, a backup plan, and then sit there refreshing my inbox just in case Karen from Accounts didn’t quite understand my vibe.

And when I don’t delegate?
I manage. I control. I fix. I soothe. I Google. I shoulder everything until I’m left standing in the kitchen at 11:07pm eating shredded cheese out of the bag like it’s a coping strategy.

Hence the title: Anxious by Managing.
Because we weren’t just raised to do our best — we were raised to be the best at doing everything. And that’s… exhausting.

So here’s what I’m thinking: maybe delegation isn’t weakness.
Maybe it’s trusting people to rise, even if they do it differently. Maybe it’s reclaiming five minutes of sanity, a warm coffee, or the audacity to rest.
And maybe — just maybe — the world won’t fall apart if we don’t personally duct-tape it together.

Still processing. Still learning.
But today? I delegated something and didn’t hover.
(Okay, I hovered mentally, but that’s progress.)

I’ll Just Do It Myself: The Eastern European Deluxe Edition

Delegating?
No, no. I was raised Eastern European 🇱🇹. We don’t delegate.
We suffer efficiently.
We anticipate needs before they’re spoken, cook for 12 “just in case,” and carry the mental load of a small military operation - without blinking or asking for help.
Because God forbid anyone thinks we’re lazy. Or worse… relaxing! 😳

So yes, I do everything myself.
The work stuff. The home stuff. The social logistics. The dentist appointments, emotional labour, light plumbing, and knowing exactly where everyone’s passport is at all times.
All done with that signature East Euro stoicism and a faint aura of silent judgment.

Then, once it’s all handled and the entire village is fed, dressed, and vaguely thriving…
I sit down to do something for me.
Like rest.
Or stare at a wall in peace.
But by then, I’m too tired to enjoy it - so I just scroll recipes I’ll never make and whisper “maybe next weekend” into the void.

So no, I don’t delegate.
I just collapse elegantly, in a freshly cleaned kitchen, wondering why I’m still exhausted.
But don’t worry - I’ll power through. I had soup.

Let’s get one thing out of the way: this isn’t about politics.
This is about what happened after a woman cried at work — in public, in power, on camera.
Rachel Reeves wiped away a tear on the front bench. And suddenly, that was the story.

Not the economy. Not global instability. Not the actual job she was doing.
Nope. The headlines, the LinkedIn think pieces, the whispered commentary all boiled down to one thing:
A woman. Cried.

And before you ask — no, I don’t need to know why she cried.
That’s her business.
But I’ll tell you this: more often than not, when women cry at work, it’s not because we’re overwhelmed. It’s because we’re furious.
Livid.
Boiling over with frustration and biting our tongue so hard it practically bleeds.

But anger isn’t “ladylike.” So it comes out the only socially acceptable way we’ve been given: quietly, with tears.

Let’s be honest: women cry. At work. In bathrooms. In meeting rooms. At their desks pretending it’s “just hay fever.”
It’s not a breakdown. It’s a pressure release. It’s what happens when you’re not allowed to shout.

If a man cried, he’d be “deeply moved.” “Human.”
But a woman? She’s “fragile.” “Losing it.” “Unfit.”

Spoiler: she’s not losing it.
She’s just been told for the millionth time to “calm down” while trying to lead with both empathy and impact.

Women in leadership don’t cry because they’re soft.
They cry because they’re sick of being dismissed. Because they care deeply. Because they’ve swallowed ten impossible things before 9am and still showed up.
Mascara smudged. Voice steady. Still leading.

So maybe the question isn’t why women cry at work.
Maybe it’s: why are they still expected not to?

And next time it happens — whether it’s you, or the brilliant woman across the table — don’t shrink back.
Don’t overreact.
Don’t call it weakness.

Let her cry. Let her lead.
Then get out of her way.

It started with a line my husband dropped mid-conversation, the kind that makes you blink twice:

“Stop making yourself the woman who drives a Fiat 500.
You’re the kind of woman who should be in a red Ferrari.”

Excuse me!?
I loved my Fiat.
It was cute, fast-ish, could park anywhere — and didn’t scream midlife crisis.

But once the metaphor sunk in, I got it.

He wasn’t talking cars.
He was calling me out (lovingly) on playing small.
On shrinking to fit into boxes that once made sense but no longer did.

It didn’t hit me all at once. But it planted a seed.

So here I am.
Starting something I’ve been putting off for a while.
Writing. Sharing. Finally stepping into the next chapter — whatever that ends up looking like.

There won’t be a launch countdown or confetti.
Just posts. Some will be rants. Some reflections. Always true.
With a bit of dry humour, some self-irony, and a lot of heart.

Writing About Women for Women

This isn’t a manifesto.
This is an open space.
A slightly messy, occasionally over-caffeinated corner of the internet where I’ll be sharing thoughts on empowering women.

I write about women because I am one.
I write for women because we’re still figuring it out.
I write to remind us that ambition doesn’t have to be loud, confidence doesn’t have to be constant, and burnout doesn’t mean you’re broken — it might just mean you’ve been doing three people’s jobs with one pair of hands and no emotional support llama.

There’ll be thoughts.
There’ll be stories.
There might be rants.
There will definitely be moments of self-irony because, well… we’ve all cried in the loo at least once and then emerged like a queen with perfect lipstick and a smile that says, “I’m fine” (we weren’t).
